  • EXT. CORNFIELD – DAY

A cornfield stretches for miles; corn stalks the size of small flagpoles. The sun sits high in the sky and the wind whispers. A rustling in the cornfield disrupts the landscape.

DIRTY BOOTS stomp through the dirt. Heavy breathing can be heard, as well as shuffling through the cornfield.

    EXT. CORNFIELD CLEARING – DAY

The sun shines bright and sizzles at a clearing a couple of yards from the cornfield

    SWEAT rolls down HERMAN’S cheek.

HERMAN, an early 40s male with salt and pepper hair and beard, wears a dirty tank top with black work pants and SOCKS.

Herman sits on a tree stump STARING.

    EXT. CORNFIELD – DAY

DIRTY BOOTS stomp over broken corn stalks. The boots stop and a RIFLE hits the ground. JAKE stops to wipe SWEAT off his forehead.

JAKE, a late 30s male; tall with a scruffy beard, wears a straw hat and carries a bag and RIFLE.

The corn stalks shade Jake while he rests. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a picture.

    EXT. CORNFIELD – DAY

Jake looks at his picture. He hears something, then continues walking.

A couple of yards behind Jake, a group of men, accompanied by women dressed in white, walk with shotguns and rifles. They head towards Jake direction.

Jake walks a few feet until he stops and sees a BLACK SHOE. He grabs the BLACK SHOE, then looks around to see if he can find its pair. BLINDED by a SMALL EARRING on the ground Jake snatches it off the ground, then continues walking.

    EXT. CORNFIELD CLEARING – DAY

Herman rubs his leg, taps his foot, and nervously laughs and smiles. He stares. SWEAT pours down his face.

ANN, a 12 year old girl, stands in front of Herman in a white dress, white shoes and white stockings. Her back turned to him in displeasure.

    ANN

I lost my earring. I’ll never find it.

Herman walks up behind Ann and takes the last remaining earring off of her ear. Ann frowns at Herman, then she turns her back again, before walking off. Herman drops the earring on the ground, then follows after her.

    EXT. CORNFIELD – DAY

A BLACK SHOE hangs from a corn stalk. Jake walks up to the BLACK SHOE and takes it down. He looks at it before putting it in his bag.

Shuffling and voices can be heard inside the cornfield. The voices are faint, but the shuffling gets louder and closer.

The voices and shuffling scare Jake. He runs through the cornfield as fast as he can. He makes it to the end of the cornfield and arrives at the clearing. Jake looks at the sun, wipes his forehead, then steps out of the cornfield and into the clearing.

    EXT. STREAM – DAY

Herman stands in a stream. The water reaches up to Herman’s chest. He just stares at Ann.

Ann stands on the edge of the bank watching Herman. Water splashes on her WHITE SHOES. She moves back to avoid her shoes getting wet.

Still in the stream, Herman walks toward Ann very slowly. He comes out of the stream FULLY CLOTHED.

Herman walks to Ann, kneels in front of her, looks up at her, then takes off her WHITE SHOES.

    ANN

But, my stockings will get wet.

Jake picks up ANN’S EARRING from the ground. He looks at it, and then puts it in his pocket. He turns around and sees a shaking in the cornfield and hears voices. He heads towards HERMAN AND ANN’S PATH but quickly changes his mind and goes another way.

A stampede of LEGS, RIFLES, BOOTS, and WHITE SHOES AND STOCKINGS pass HERMAN AND ANN’S PATH.

    EXT. STREAM – DAY

ANN’S STOCKINGS lay on the bank. Herman and Ann are in the stream. Herman carries Ann.

    Herman touches Ann’s hair.

Jake watches Herman and Ann from behind a tree near the bank.

Herman kisses Ann on the cheek.

    Jake shoots his rifle.

The shot hits Ann. Herman yells, then sees Jake standing on the bank. He releases Ann; ANN’S BODY flows with the stream. Herman heads toward Jake.

Jake picks up Ann’s stockings. Herman kicks Jake in the stomach, then tries to punch him in the face, but Jake knocks him out with his elbow.

Jake drags him away from the bank and into the woods.
