    Whistle Down the Wind: 1961. Great Britain. Directed by Bryan Forbes. With Hayley Mills, Alan Bates, Bernard Lee. This was the first directorial effort by actor/writer Forbes (who died in May of this year), who went on to make several of the most celebrated British films of the 1960s. The adolescent Mills, whose mother wrote the novel from which the film was adapted, had already become a star under the tutelage of Walt Disney, and this was a breakthrough role for Bates. 99 min.
