The University Film and Video Association (UFVA) is an organization of professors, scholars, and film and video makers.The organization is based in the U.S.; it has members throughout the world. The UFVA is an international organization where media production and writing meets the history, theory and criticism of the media. The UFVA members are image-makers and artists, teachers and students, archivists and distributors, college departments, libraries, and manufacturers. UFVA holds an annual conference and publishes the Journal of Film and Video, a periodical featuring articles on film and video production, history, theory, criticism, and aesthetics. The UFVA is one of the principal U.S. academic organizations for studying media.
The 2015 UFVA conference will be held August 4-8 at American University in Washington, DC. This year's conference theme is MEDIA WITH IMPACT.
American University’s School of Communication is a laboratory for professional education, communication research and innovative production across the fields of film and media arts, public communication, communication studies, journalism and game design. SOC’s academic programs emphasize traditional skills and values while anticipating emerging technologies, opportunities and audiences. AU’s SOC has a storied tradition of media for a public purpose, with a blend of academic and professional activity that leverages its DC location. Much of this research is performed within SOC’s academic centers, including its flagship Center for Media & Social Impact (CMSI, formerly the Center for Social Media) founded by Dr. Pat Aufderheide. CMSI showcases ways to use media as creative tools for public knowledge and action focusing on social documentary films and the public media environment's support of civil society and democracy. The SOC is delighted to host the 2015 UFVA conference with the theme “Media With Impact: Engaging, Enterprising & Experiential.”

NOTE: You must be a member of UFVA to submit a proposal or project. If your membership is not current for 2015, you will need to join or renew before you can view the submission page(s). UFVA members can submit up to two (2) proposals or projects to the conference. Submissions can address the conference theme but are not required to do so; all submissions are welcome.
There are five submission categories; all conference sessions are 1 hour and 45 minutes long, including time for discussion and response(s). In the PAPERS & PANELS category, you can submit a stand-alone paper or a pre-constituted panel with a minimum of three panelists; 20 minutes is the standard presentation time for each person. For FILMS & VIDEOS, the submission form will ask you to categorize your project and provide a running time in minutes. NEW MEDIA submissions can be installations and/or classroom presentations. The SCRIPTS category includes shorts, features, or pilots for a one-hour TV drama; a portion of the script will be read and discussed at the conference. WORKSHOPS are more interactive, hands-on sessions that typically focus on the nuts-and-bolts of pre-production, production, or post-production.
