  • Cinematic Conversations is a weekly virtual discussion that takes place over Zoom and on Facebook Live where the DVF engaging host, Artistic Director Bart Weiss, and guest talk about films that inspire, surprise, and challenge the audience to consider other points of view, in addition to taking questions from the online film fan community.
    Hester Street is a 1975 romantic film based on Abraham Cahan's 1896 novella Yekl: A Tale of the New York Ghetto, and was adapted and directed by Joan Micklin Silver. In 2011, Hester Street was added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. The film stars Steven Keats and Carol Kane.
    Joan Micklin Silver, the filmmaker whose first feature, “Hester Street,” expanded the marketplace for American independent film and broke barriers for women in directing. Ms. Silver wrote and directed “Hester Street” (1975), the story of a young Jewish immigrant couple from Russia on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the 1890s. It was a personal effort, a low-budget 34-day location shoot, that became a family project.

    Ferne Pearlstein ( director the Last Laugh), fellow 3 Star members and filmmaker Cynthia Salzman Mondell and Allen Mondell, Peter Miller (Jews in Baseball, Sacco and Vanzetti) and others.
