About Our Speaker, Instructor, and Mentor: Steven Poster, ASC Steven Poster ASC, a Chicago native, began his cinematic journey at age twenty-one in Chicago, filming television commercials, documentaries, and industrial films. He swiftly transitioned to feature films, serving as Second Unit Director of Photography on iconic projects like “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and contributing significant additional photography to “Blade Runner.” As Director of Photography, Steven lensed a range of motion pictures, including “Stuart Little 2,” “Daddy Day Care,” “Rocky V,” and the Madonna music video “Like a Prayer,” earning an ASC nomination for Ridley Scott’s “Someone To Watch Over Me.” His global footprint includes being the sole American cinematographer to shoot a French language film in France, “Une Chance sur Deux,” directed by Patrice Leconte. A pivotal collaboration with writer/director Richard Kelly commenced in 2001 with the cult-favorite “Donnie Darko,” followed by “Southland Tales” and “The Box.” Steven’s cinematography extended to various television pilots and acclaimed movies such as “Roswell,” “Mrs. Harris,” and “The Color of Justice,” along with episodes of “Master’s of Sex” and the pilot for the Netflix series “Hemlock Grove.” Beyond his creative endeavors, Steven has played influential roles as Past President of the International Cinematographers Guild, Past President of the American Society of Cinematographers, and current ASC treasurer. As a passionate mentor, he has guided numerous aspiring filmmakers and cinematographers, leaving an enduring legacy in the motion picture industry. His commitment to advancing digital imaging technology is evident through his role in reshaping the ASC’s Technology committee and his engagements with major motion picture-related corporations globally.
